Plane L-29 was designed to replace the air force of Czechoslovakia piston training aircraft. With the usual circuit with straight wings, the prototype XL-29 first flew in April 1959 years and was ordered in a pre-production in 1960 year, followed by a flight of the second prototype. As a result of the competition held in the next year, the aircraft 1-29, the winning aircraft TS-11 «Iskra" company PZL Mielec and Yak-30 Yakovlev Design Bureau, was chosen as the standard training aircraft of the Air Forces of the Warsaw Pact.

In his favor the simplicity and strength of the airframe design, ease of management. These same properties make the plane L-29 very attractive to private customers in three decades. The first production aircraft L-29 came into operation in the year 1963, 11 years and after, when the company "Aero» (Aero) has built his last aircraft was made at least 3600 copies. More 2000 of them were delivered to the Soviet Union, while hundreds of others were used in the Air Force Eastern Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia.

At least eight countries still exploit the venerable training aircraft for training purposes. More 70 aircraft L-29, retired in the early 1990-ies of the operation in the Soviet Union, the Czech Republic and Indonesia, is now in civilian hands. Almost all of them operated in the United States, there are exceptions in the civil register in Italy and South Africa. **
