Still combat aircraft the Air Force more than 20 countries L-39 built as a natural successor to L-29. Design work on the "Albatross» (Albatros) began in 1966 year. The team, led by Ian Vylchekom chartered engineer, he worked closely with representatives of the Soviet Air Force, which became the main customer aircraft. Turbofan engine AI-25, mounted on the L-39, has almost twice as much traction as compared to the engine of "Motorlet" aircraft L-29.

Soon after it was installed on a new glider, similar in size to the previous Czech training aircraft, it became clear that the Albatross aircraft would have a higher maximum speed, better climb rate and the ability to carry offensive weapons. Although the first prototype flew in November of the year 1968, permission for serial shipments was not issued until the end of 1972, when the Air Force of the Soviet Union, the Czech Republic and East Germany confirmed the choice of the L-39 aircraft to replace L-29. Next year, operational tests were carried out, and serial aircraft began to arrive in the Czechoslovak Air Force at the beginning of 1974. Since then, more than 2800 aircraft have been commissioned, including training modifications (C, TS and V) and modifications (ZA and Z0) capable of carrying armament.

The aircraft "Albatross" is still produced in the Czech Republic in the modernized modification L-59, different uprated engines and western avionics. Now in the hands of civilians is a 30 aircraft L-39, the majority of which are registered in the United States.
