History of Bodø International Airport

In 1921, an aerodrome appeared on the outskirts of the Norwegian city of Bodø, which ensured the fastest transportation of mail items between the northern and southern parts of the country.

With the advent of World War II, the Bodø aerodrome was actively used by the Norwegian Air Force to service military aircraft, and therefore this air harbor was not operated for civil purposes.

In 1942, the Bodø airdrome underwent a number of important changes, in particular, the German military command improved the infrastructure of the airfield, and in place of the gravel airstrip appeared concrete, which allowed to receive and service heavy aircraft.

In the period from 1945 year to 1950 year, Bodø airport was again involved for the needs of civil aviation, while the main purpose of the air harbor was the transportation of goods and mail.

At the beginning of the 50-ies of the last century, Bodø Airport was again used for the needs of military aviation, in particular, long-range bombers were based here, the main purpose of which was to contain possible aggression from the USSR.

In 1975, Bodø airport was used to test the French supersonic passenger liner Concord, and a few years later, the air harbor finally began servicing passenger flights.

After the construction of the new terminal in 1990, the infrastructure of the air harbor has improved significantly, which has attracted carriers, after which, flights from international airports have been launched from Bodø airport.

In 2015, the volume of passengers serviced by the International Bodø International Airport has risen to an all-time high of 1,733 million.
