Penza Airport is the only civilian air transport node located in the Penza region. The airport itself is in 10 kilometers from the regional center and is quite popular with local carriers.

History of development

In the Penza region air travel began in 1936 year. Three years later, it was built near Ternovka aviation airport. The new airport took transit flights.

In 1963, a passenger terminal was built. The terminal was partially reconstructed in 70-80's.

In 1970, the construction of a new runway with artificial turf.

Beginning in 1980, the airport is rapidly increasing rate of increase in passenger traffic, bringing the number of daily flights to sixty.

With the beginning of perestroika the pace of activity has declined significantly, and by the year 1998 stopped all scheduled flights. Before 2003 year the airport is only a seasonal activity in the summer months were established flights to resort cities of the country.

Incidents

In June, the Tu 1986-134 fails to make the tearing of the strip after the crackdown. As a result, aborted take-off the aircraft was unable to stop within the runway. One of the passengers 59 died of a heart attack.
