Antonov An-71

Antonov An-71 is an apparatus for radar control. By codifying the organization of NATO, he was baptized as the Madcap, which means "Screwball". The machine was developed in the walls of the Antonov Design Bureau. The main task of the new unit was replaced Tu-126 model. There were made two copies, which in today's time is not used, one of them is in the Aviation Museum in Kiev.

History of the AN-71

The draft of this aircraft began to develop in the autumn of 1982 years by order of the CMH USSR and was appointed chief designer AI Naumenko. General designer of the project An-71 was appointed directly to DC Antonov.

Before the start of the design to the designers was raised a number of challenges and are called the characteristics that should have the new aircraft, namely:

  • the machine must be in the air is not less than 4,5 hours;

  • equipment can detect all targets at a great distance, even those that fly at low altitudes;

  • keep under surveillance while 120 objects;

  • detect all radar radiation and analysis to determine their information;

  • the opportunity to work with the fighters for the more effective implementation of military operations;

  • provide information to all Allied ground forces air defense, air force, and others;

  • the possibility of flight in all climatic zones with large variations of temperature conditions;

  • the use of the machine and its equipment at any time of the day or night;

  • the aircraft must be self-basing for the big time.

Only in the spring of 83 the final version of the design and equipment for AN-71 was approved. Due to the fact that the designers had qualitative elaborations, it was possible to pass the stage of construction of the sketch of the apparatus, therefore all efforts were directed to the construction of the flight specimen. The final assembly of the An-71 was planned for the summer of 1985. At the same time, three units of this apparatus were manufactured, which were to be tested separately in each direction. The creation of this machine passed quickly enough due to the fact that a lot of details and design features were borrowed from the An-72.

In the summer of the year 85 the machine was ready, after which it was referred to the study, during which the machine made its first flight in July 12 running AV Tkachenko at the Kiev airport. In the same year, actively conducted flight testing of the machine and continued to 86 years.

In the spring of the year 1986 the car was equipped with avionics. On this unit for the first time in the whole range of aircraft "AN" of the time the system was installed antispin parachute. All Realized tests have confirmed the high quality of the flight performance in all flight modes. It should be noted that test flights were carried out in different climatic conditions, the Soviet Union and Asia.

All flight tests continued until the early 90-ies. Despite the fact that the car had excellent performance, it has not been transferred to the State Commission for testing, and, as a consequence, the aircraft AN-71 and did not get into serial production. For the first time this unit was introduced to the public in the summer of 1995 years.

Features An-71 constructions

Antonov An-71 is made in the normal pattern airfoil on which the radar antenna was installed in the tail compartment. All antenna equipment was enclosed in the fairing in the form of a disk, which is attached to the keel device. This construction had the shape of the reverse sweep. Before choosing this type of construction, it was elaborated a variety of options, one of them planned to install this equipment on the pylon.

The basic aircraft design flaws AN-71

  • the lack of stability of the machine has been marked in the longitudinal and lateral channel.

  • There was a significantly reduced performance trimmer through the installation of an airplane rudder, which consisted of four sections.

  • The machine was required to reduce the impact of exhaust gases flow from the engine to the tail.

vehicle chassis was reinforced structure was represented by three pillars. This structure of the chassis system allows the AN-71 operation at aerodromes with unpaved.

The power plant was represented by two turbofan engines Class D-436K. They possessed great power in 7,5 thousand kilograms each. Apart from these, the car had another engine type TRD RD-38A, which had a capacity of 2,9 thousand kilograms. It helped to make this engine ups with poorly prepared runways. The entire propulsion system allows the air from the air intake, which is located on top of the housing. It was made to lift into the air of an aircraft that weighed almost 20 tons.

Maximum weight of the device during takeoff could reach 32 tons. At the same AN-71 could reach speeds in 650 km / h, cruising speed was 530 km / h. The maximum height to which the apparatus could climb, was 10,8 kilometers. Designers were performed assigned tasks and the time of flight without landing, which was 5 hours. It required a crew of three people to operate the machine.

In addition to the standard model of the AN-71, it was also made for the ship-based unit, which is designated as AN71K.

Missed the great project like me, you wonder then inflate the failure of the aircraft. On state tests Antonovsky planes have always shown to the developer characteristics.

Location of engines above the wings causes a lot of noise in the cabin and cockpit controls. I can not imagine how it was possible the crew of the aircraft to conduct surveillance and control over the territory. Layout "Cheburashka" - clearly negative in terms of soundproofing. Maybe this was the main problem, due to which the serial production of the aircraft and have not begun.

I agree with the previous comment. Just want to add that this AN-71, which was sent to the museum more "lucky". Many of the bombers and fighters after the rejection of nuclear weapons simply cut for scrap. And this was done in front in aviakonstuktorov who have invested in the creation of their heart and soul.

As far as I know, he did as a strategic long-range reconnaissance. But as the arms race at the end of 80-ies stopped, put the model into production is not considered necessary. And the disintegration of the Union is also affected. Why Ukraine will not be long reconnaissance complexes after giving up nuclear weapons.

What it looks like the US "Orion". I wonder if he will be able to sit on the deck of the ship?
