AQM-91 Compass Arrow

AQM-91 Compass Arrow is a high-altitude reconnaissance insignificant UAV, which was developed by engineers of the American company Teledyne Ryan Aeronautical. AQM-91 or Firefly Model 154 is considered the first representative of the second generation of UAVs. Initially, it was designed as reconnaissance high-altitude unobtrusive drone. It reached heights of 24400 m with a range of 3700 km. To increase the navigation characteristics on the UAV, an inertial navigation system and an onboard computer were installed. The fleet consists of 28 units AQM-91. Basically, they were used to fly over the Chinese border, so at the beginning of the 70-ies, after political rapprochement between China and the US, reconnaissance flights over the Chinese territory ceased, and the demand for scouts in the Compass Arrow dropped to zero.

UAV was developed by Ryan, and Compass Arrow made its first flight in 1970. The drone is designed in the usual aerodynamic configuration with a low-swept swept wing. The tail assembly is a horizontal stabilizer with two keels and rudders inclined to the longitudinal axis of the fuselage, which are mounted on the ends. The fuselage is semi-monocoque, and above it is an engine manufactured by General Electric J97-GE-3. The design of an unmanned vehicle combines many technologies "stealth".
