The C-131 was a modification of transport for the Air Force / US Navy particularly successful twin-engine aircraft series 240 / 340 / 440 of "Convair» (Convair), which were made almost two decades since the end of 1940-ies. On-131 was improved by modifying the aircraft T-29 (which in turn was made on the basis of 240 series aircraft), 46 copies of which were received in the Air Force operation in 1950-1951 years as a training aircraft for training navigators, bombardiers and operators radar where they changed planes in-25.

Surnamed "Sameritan" (Samaritan) for their first role of ambulances, 26 S-131 aircraft came to the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) in December 1954. The main modifications that followed were C-131B (with more powerful engines - 36 copies were built), C-131D (10 copies were built for European parts of MATS), VC-131D (16 copies for staff and VIPs), R4Y -1 (modification for the US Navy, in 1962.god received a new designation C-131F - built 10 copies) and C-131E (training aircraft Strategic Air Command for the development of electronic countermeasures - built 11 copies). In addition, a small number of twins optimized for military purposes were built for Convair for the Royal Air Force, the Air Force of Germany and Italy. In the US military service the aircraft has proved itself to be multifaceted, performing all kinds of tasks, from simple cargo transportation to training of specialists in electronic counteraction.

One of the copies of the aircraft C-131 was even converted into a prototype "flying artillery battery," the United States. The last of these aircraft companies "Convair" left the service at the end of 1970-ies, although several aircraft detained in the Air National Guard and reserve units in the Navy to 1990 years.
