All this made the DHC-2 one of the most successful and popular aircraft in small aviation. The scope of this aircraft is extensive. It is used in passenger and transport transportation, for agricultural and aeronautical work, in search and rescue and tourist expeditions, as well as in the air force as a light transport aircraft and training aircraft.

DHC-2 design work began by de Havilland Canada in September 1946 in Toronto. The aircraft received an all-metal hull with a high-mounted straight wing. The aircraft was powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada R-985AN Wasp Junior engine with 450 hp. The aircraft with this engine became the basic modification and received the designation Beaver I.

DHC-2 made its maiden flight on August 16, 1947. The aircraft was flown by pilot Russell "Russ" Bannock. After the end of the test program in March 1948, the aircraft was certified. The basic version of the Beaver I aircraft, accommodated six passenger seats, or in the transport version was capable of carrying up to 680 kilograms of payload.
