As a cargo modification of the revolutionary DC-1 1933 aircraft of Douglas, the C-47 was the military descendant of the Douglas Sleeper Transport aircraft, an enlarged version of the DC-2 aircraft. The changes included the installation of more powerful engines, cab floor reinforcement and large cargo doors. Therefore, when in 1940 the US Air Force issued a contract for the first C-47 aircraft, Douglas immediately began production.

It was built about 963 aircraft C-47. The first aircraft arrived in the US Air Force service in 1941 year.
