As a cargo modification of the revolutionary DC-1 1933 aircraft of Douglas, the C-47 was the military descendant of the Douglas Sleeper Transport aircraft, an enlarged version of the DC-2 aircraft. When in 1936 the DC-3 was put into service, the Army immediately contacted Douglas and advised the company to redesign the airliner for military use. The changes included the installation of more powerful engines, cab floor reinforcement and large cargo doors. Therefore, when in 1940 the US Air Force issued a contract for the first C-47 aircraft, Douglas immediately began production.

It was built about 963 aircraft C-47. The first aircraft arrived in the US Air Force service in 1941 year. Subsequent modifications "Skytrain" aircraft (Skytrain - a heavenly wagon) model included A and B, which are different from the original aircraft C-47 mainly electrical system and motors.
