The development of transport and passenger aircraft Douglas DC-7 began in early 50-ies of the last century, when this was based on a model Douglas DC-6, which has proven itself perfectly thanks to its powerful engines, large cargo and passenger capacity, as well as reliability. The first flight of the Douglas DC-7 took place on May 18, 1953, and already in the fall, this aircraft entered serial production.

The Douglas DC-7 aircraft was actively used by many air carriers of the world to perform both cargo and passenger flights, and, moreover, in fact, the controllability of the aircraft, thanks to a number of improvements, has significantly improved, while such disadvantages as noise have decreased.

The power plant of the aircraft Douglas DC-7 is four piston aircraft engine screw Wright R-3350-30W, each of which is capable of 3250 hp power, which ultimately allowed the aircraft is very effective to transport even very heavy loads, let of passenger transportation. However, subsequently installed massive engines brought rather negative, because the actual capacity of the power plant are usually used only 65%, while, as the fuel consumption was rather large.

Due to the changes in the layout of the cabin, on board the aircraft, depending on the configuration and modification of the aircraft cabin could accommodate up to 105 people at the same time the aircraft could perform flights on local airlines and transcontinental air travel

Nevertheless it, the reliability of the new aircraft was very low - from built 343 aircraft in various accidents and crashes were destroyed 23 aircraft (6,7%), while in most cases the culprit was either engine failures or malfunctions of systems management.

In addition to basic production version of the airplane Douglas DC-7, 105 which was built units airline Douglas Aircraft Company, has carried out the development and four additional modifications.

Version Douglas DC-7B received not only an increased maximum takeoff weight, but also increase the fuel tanks, which allowed in turn exploit this model transcontinental in routing. Among other things, the maximum passenger capacity of the aircraft increased from 95 105 to people. It was built 112 airplanes of this modification.

Model Douglas DC-7C Seven Seas has a new power plant, provided by four engines Wright R-3350, each of which has a capacity of 3400 hp, and in addition, the maximum flight distance was increased to 10270 km. During the production cycle was established 121 plane.

Plane Douglas DC-7D was never put into production, though, the developers of the Douglas Aircraft Company assumed that installed on it turboprop aircraft engines Rolls-Royce Tyne would increase the efficiency of the aircraft.

Version Douglas DC-7F cargo modification of aircraft, equipped with special wide doors for completing with the maximum allowable dimensions of goods.

At present, worldwide operation is conducted only 11 aircraft of this model.
