John was born in Port Arthur. He began his career in the infantry. In 1940, he joined the Air Force. Autumn 1941, after graduating from flight school went to the UK.

1942 spring, John was sent to Malta. The first debut was unsuccessful - during take-off (at the Spitfire) with USS Eagle MakErloy injured tail and was forced to land on the ground. After that, he was suspended from flying.

But a month later on the account of John were registered 2 downed enemy aircraft. In October, he was awarded the 1942 and promoted to the rank of 7 downed aircraft. John made an emergency landing 3 times, including the first flight.

By the end of the year he was recalled to Canada to work instructor. On the front MakErloy back in the winter of 1944 15 June, he shot down a German Bf-109After which he was shot anti-aircraft guns, but John managed to land on its territory. Total for the war he shot down German planes 10.

After the war, he returned home. He entered in the Air Force Reserve, where he worked as an instructor for a while. In 1948, John lived in Vancouver, where he was found by recruiters and Israel. McElroy joined the Israeli Air Force and recommended 40 pilots, some of them followed his example.

McElroy and his wingman Doyle 30 December knocked one Egyptian aircraft, stormed the Israeli positions. Both pilots were killed the Egyptian air force, unable to eject.

McElroy was in Israel until the spring of 1949 in the Canadian Air Force came back in April 1951 He served as an instructor in 421-th Air Division, stationed in Europe and fly to the "Sabre". Finally he retired in November of 1964
