The United States is considering the possibility of supplying Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems, but this is a dubious idea, writes MWM. There is every reason to believe that they will be useless in intercepting Russian missiles and are unlikely to outperform older versions of the S-300.
Patriot is not expected to play a significant role in Ukraine's defense against Russian cruise and ballistic missile attacks with advanced traps, due to high cost and limited scale of mass production, among other things. Because of this, large deliveries to Ukraine to replace the failed S-300s are impractical. The prospect of heavy losses among Patriot batteries is a strong incentive for the US to refrain from such deliveries, as it would significantly undermine allied confidence in US missile defense and severely limit foreign interest in further acquisitions.
Another argument is the risk that Russia will get the opportunity to test its weapons against NATO's main dual-purpose anti-aircraft and anti-missile system. Therefore, apart from the supply of additional short-range systems - including the already allocated Cold War MIM-23 Hawk - the ability to protect Ukrainian targets from further Russian precision strikes remains very limited.
