A type: single-engine anti-submarine aircraft, electronic warfare aircraft and aircraft of general purpose

Crew: three people next to each other

Designed to fulfill the promising technical requirements of the Navy GR.17 / 45, issued in October 1945, Gannet successfully combined the attack and anti-submarine roles in a single aircraft built not only for operation from decks of small aircraft carriers but also using Ship diesel fuel. The unique turboprop engine of the Gannet was the key to the success of its operation: it was distinguished by coaxial independent screws. And one of them could be turned off to reduce fuel consumption and increase the range or time of patrolling: both of these factors are vital for a sea strike anti-submarine aircraft. It was built 256 aircraft modifications of AS 1 / 4.

The first copies of the navy began to arrive in January 1955 years, a decade after the release of the Technical Requirements GR.17 / 45. After warplanes followed military training modification T 2 / T 5 (46 all copies). Both options, and anti uchebnotrenirovochny were sold to the Royal Australian Navy, West Germany and Indonesia. A number of aircraft modifications AS 4 later in 1960-ies, has been upgraded to version AS 6 / 7. At the same time, five aircraft were converted to cargo planes to deliver cargo to the deck of aircraft carriers (Carrier On-board Delivery - COD).

"Finally, as a result of a radical revision of the tasks for the Royal Navy in 1958-1961 44 years they were made of new aircraft AEW 3, equipped with a huge fairing under the fuselage to accommodate the aerial surveillance radar APS-20. AEW 3 were the last planes "Gannet" decommissioned in 1978 year.
