Investments General Electric in the creation of a new engine

GE is less than a year to complete the release of a commercial jet engine.

The company's total project costs were $ 300 million, including the construction of new buildings and the purchase of equipment, between 2013 and the end of 2015. Currently, all engine units are being tested, and a production line is being established. A special center was set up at the University of Dayton in West Chester to test and fine-tune engine systems.

GE employs a total of more than 15 people, most of whom are engaged in aerospace, machining systems and power generation. Industrial partnerships provide additional jobs for thousands of people.

The Leap engine is a GE product developed in collaboration with the French company CFM International.

The production of engines at the joint venture is developing at an accelerated pace: if in 2012, 3296 engines were sold, then in 2014, 3740 units.

The new engine will be the first product that will contain additively manufactured parts, as well as components and assemblies, in the production of which composite materials with a ceramic matrix are used. New technologies will create an engine that will be lighter, able to withstand high temperatures, which will increase fuel economy by 15% compared to current models.

Deliveries of new engines have already been distributed in the two years ahead (2016 and 2017 years).

Training and certification for the production of a new engine

The company is currently testing the engine to improve performance and prepare for federal certification. New components used in manufacturing include: turbine shrouds made using composites, material containing microscopic fibers woven together, fuel injectors used in manufacturing 3D manufacturing process.

We construct new plants: to create products from composites in Asheville (NC), additive manufacturing plant in Auburn (AL) and an assembly plant in West Lafayette (Indiana).

The engines will be assembled on two lines to duplicate contracts and increase the reliability of the production program. In 2015, production facilities will be checked before the start of mass production. Service centers will also be subject to inspection, as well as companies that carry out all operations related to the sale of products.
