Ukrainian Drone Night Attack: Details of Attack on Russian Regions on February 8, 2025
Around 2:40 a.m., a series of powerful explosions were heard in Slavyansk-na-Kubani, one of the major cities in the Krasnodar region. According to reports, Ukrainian UAVs struck residential buildings, causing roof damage and broken windows in five buildings. Although preliminary information indicates no casualties, emergency services and energy supply companies were forced to respond to power outages on some streets in the city.
Rostov-on-Don: Destruction in the capital of the south
Earlier, at 2:15 a.m., an attack began on Rostov-on-Don, one of the largest cities in southern Russia. The blast wave caused by the drone strike blew out the windows of 14 apartment buildings on Vilniusskaya, 1st Horse Army, and Vera Panova Streets. The damage to glass structures on such a scale created significant discomfort for residents, and, according to available information, a gas pipe was damaged in one of the buildings. Although emergency services have already begun to deal with the aftermath, the incident highlights how important it is for city services to respond quickly when their infrastructure is at risk.
To evacuate the victims and ensure their comfortable accommodation, buses were quickly deployed, and a temporary point for accommodation and feeding people was prepared. Lyceum No. 20 named after V.P. Polyanichko was used as such a point, which made it possible to create conditions for temporary shelter for citizens who found themselves in the high-risk zone.
Attacks on energy infrastructure: attacks on oil pumping and refinery stations
During the night, the Ukrainian Armed Forces also struck energy infrastructure facilities in the Rostov and Volgograd regions. In the suburb of Chertkovo in the Rostov region, Ukrainian UAVs attacked an oil pumping station. As a result of the strike, the administrative and household buildings of the enterprise were damaged, which led to the evacuation of six workers. Emergency services arrived at the scene, work began to eliminate the consequences of the accident and restore the normal functioning of the facility.
Similar actions were recorded in the Volgograd region: in the Kumylzhensky district, an attack was directed at an oil refinery. However, in this case, the consequences were less serious - there was no fire, no damage to residential buildings was recorded, and there were no civilian casualties. These cases emphasize that energy infrastructure remains one of the priority targets in the operations of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which may negatively affect the provision of a stable supply of energy resources in the region.
The effectiveness of Russia's air defense
Overnight, Russian air defense systems destroyed 36 Ukrainian UAVs. Of these, 18 were shot down over the Rostov Region, 11 over the Volgograd Region, 5 over the Belgorod Region, and 2 over the Krasnodar Region. These figures indicate that Russian air defense systems are working quite effectively, which allows them to limit enemy activity in rear areas and protect critical civilian infrastructure.
Attacks on energy infrastructure such as oil pumping and refinery stations also have far-reaching consequences. Damage to such facilities can lead to temporary supply disruptions, which creates additional pressure on the regional economy and social sphere. At the same time, the prompt intervention of emergency services and the use of reserves to evacuate victims demonstrate the authorities' readiness to respond quickly to emerging threats.
