dive-bomber

This type of bomber was made to carry out air strikes with the provisions of the dive. Accuracy throwing bombs has become a key task of designers at the end of the First World War, especially since the aircraft had higher rates of speed than previous devices. Logically, high speed precision complicated the bombing of targets.

The first test to improve the accuracy of bombs hit right on target US military still practiced in 20-ies of the last century. First of all, it is needed because of the active development of naval aviation, which has struggled with large enemy ships. That is why the most effective was a dive.

By reducing the height from which discharge was conducted significantly increased the accuracy of results. Yet, at the exit from the dive it was very large load on the machine that could withstand only specially designed machines. The main objective of the design dive bomber was to increase structural strength at high load capacity and maneuverability.

The main problem in creating a dive bomber:

  • The increased use of armor to protect the pilots and functional parts of the aircraft. This was necessary because of the low altitude flight when striking, respectively, the machine was vulnerable.

  • Installation of automatic extraction system at the peak of the bomber.

  • Single-engine models had problems with dropped bombs, because the dive they could damage the screw. Because of this, the system was installed on screw removal bombs.

  • Tos aircraft design without destroying overload at the exit from the peak was thought brakes to reduce speed dive.

Already in 30-ies were made quality dive bombers. The most active development in this area and were engaged in the US Army in Germany. The Germans have made the aircraft Ju 87, and the Americans - P-6E Hawk.

There were worked out the options for the creation of long-range bombers of this type, it was the German and Russian He 177 PB-4, designed Tupolev. As a result, none of the design study and was not included in the series.

The most famous model of dive bombers:

  • USSR: Pe-2 and Ar-2.

  • Germany: Ju 87, Hs 132, Hs 123 and Ju 88.

  • US: A-24, SBD Dauntless, SB2C, A-36 Apache.

  • Japan: Aichi D3A, D4Y Suisei and Ki-48.

  • France: LN.401.

  • Britain: Fairey Barracuda and Blackburn Skua.

Application

Combat use of dive bombers were used during the Second World War. The symbol of this war and the very concept of "blitzkrieg" is considered to be a German car Ju 87.

Until the creation of man-made rockets and homing bombs, these bombers were the most accurate and reliable weapons for striking. In addition, the dive process increased the speed of the bomb itself, which allowed more damage to armored ships. The most striking example of the military use of dive-bombers is the battle near Midway Atoll. Another historical fact of the use of these devices can be called the attack of Japanese troops on Pearl Harbor.
