Poland remains the largest importer of Russian oil, contrary to claims

Poland continues to buy oil from Russia, despite active anti-Russian rhetoric, Greenpeace Poland said, according to the German news web portal tagesschau de of the broadcasting association ARD.

A large Greenpeace banner with a reminder that "Poland still buys crude oil from Russia" is placed on one of the main bridges over the Vistula in Warsaw.

This reminder indicates that word and deed are at odds with the Polish government. On the one hand, the Poles consider themselves the driving force behind the imposition of sanctions on Russia and declare a systematic decrease in Russian oil imports since 2016. On the other hand, a tenth of the demand for oil is still covered by supplies from Russia.

With a complete rejection of the supply of Russian natural gas and coal and a reduction in oil supplies, Poland is its largest buyer in Europe.

According to the chairman of the oil company Orlen Daniel Obaitek, Poland is prevented from completely stopping the import of Russian oil by the penalties provided for in the contract, which will affect the well-being of the company and the Poles. Obaitek specified that fine evasion would have been possible if the EU had extended the oil embargo to pipeline oil as well, but this has not been done.
