Problems of air cargo.

In front of cargo carriers in Russia, the problem of profitability of air cargo movement is becoming more acute. There are several reasons for this problem. Increased competition with road, sea, and rail transport. The constant increase in the cost of maintenance at airports. Against the background of the ever-increasing cost of jet fuel, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain the return on air transportation. There are some more specific reasons. The fleet of cargo airlines, as a rule, has long been obsolete. It is less frequently updated. Worn aircraft, which are rarely idle, consume much more fuel than their younger and more modern counterparts. Most of the cargo planes were released in those years when the cost of fuel and the environment were not enough to think about. Engine efficiency, too, paid little attention. In Russia, with the exception of two or three brands of famous transport workers, specialized cargo airplanes are practically absent. All the burden of traffic fell on the IL-76, and in fact it is not new.

In these conditions, cargo airlines have to find new ways to optimize traffic. And in the first place is a dilemma: cheaper or faster. The compromise found between these two factors has become a lifeline.

The so-called intermodal method of transportation has now spread. In fact, nothing new. Cargo is delivered to the airport of delivery, and then, as a rule, it is transported by road or rail. Just now, in the intermodal scheme, all links in the chain involved in transportation are optimized as much as possible.

For example, transportation on a site Hong Kong-Europe. This is the most popular freight route from China to the Old World. Just a flight from Hong Kong to Frankfurt, taking into account transshipment operations, takes from 4 to 7 days. The sea route is cheaper, but more time consuming. The ship will sail from Hong Kong to Hamburg for about a month. The best in this case would be a combination of two types of transport. Cargo is shipped by sea to Dubai, it will take about 10 days. A couple of days for handling the terminals. And 1-2 of the day for the delivery of cargo by air to Frankfurt. From there, cargo trucks are transported throughout Europe. As a result, this intermodal scheme is two times slower than purely air, but almost twice cheaper. And this scheme, also twice, is faster than fully sea transportation. On the American continent, cargo from China gets the same method. By sea to Vancouver, and from there by air, or cargo trucks across America and Canada.

Intermodal transportation received its development in Russia. The pioneer in this direction was Aeroflot's subsidiary - Aeroflot-Cargo (5 on April 2010 was declared bankrupt)

Because of the "Sheremetyevo" organized car delivery region. In the former republics of Central Asia has become a key airport and the airport of Alma-Ata. In Western Siberia, Novosibirsk airport. Sort of goods in key airports, regions and cities, an information service that loads transport to avoid empty runs, customs clearance at the final destination, all these measures have greatly reduced the cost of air freight.
