The Russian A-50 was still shot down: The culprit behind the destruction of the $300 million plane has been identified

A recent investigation by the Investigative Committee of Russia and the military counterintelligence of the FSB made it possible to identify the culprit in the destruction of the unique A-50U long-range radar detection and control aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces. As a result of the terrorist attack, a plane worth more than $300 million was shot down, which caused a wide resonance in the public and military circles. Such data приводит "Kommersant".

Criminal case of terrorist attack and search

Since the attack on the A-50U took place in the skies over Russia, and the aircraft did not directly participate in hostilities, a criminal case was opened for a terrorist attack. As a result of a thorough investigation, it was established that responsibility for this crime lies with the commander of the 138th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), Colonel Mykola Dzyamana. It was his subordinates who fired the fatal missile at the Russian plane.

The Khamovnichesky District Court of Moscow granted the petition of the Main Military Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of Russia (GVSU ICR) and arrested Colonel Nikolai Dzyaman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in absentia. He is accused of committing a crime under paragraph “b” of Part 3 of Art. 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (terrorist act resulting in the death of a person). Colonel Dzyaman is on the federal wanted list.

What is quite remarkable is that the Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on the information about the destruction of the aircraft.

Attack on A-50U: details of the tragedy

On February 23, 2024, an A-50U aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces patrolled the airspace over the Krasnodar Territory. Colonel Dzyaman, realizing that this aircraft is not intended for combat operations and has no weapons, and its flight passes exclusively over Russian territory, gave his subordinates an illegal order to destroy it.

The missile strike led to the destruction of the aircraft and the death of ten crew members on board. This incident caused a wide resonance and required the immediate intervention of higher law enforcement agencies and military counterintelligence.

The A-50 aircraft and its modifications are based on the Il-76 aircraft and are known as “flying radars”. The equipment installed in each of these aircraft can simultaneously track several dozen targets in the sky and on the ground, including missile launches and aircraft takeoffs. These unique capabilities make the A-50U indispensable in the air control and missile attack warning system.

The role of the lawyer and next steps

The lawyer who defended Colonel Dzyaman by appointment declined to comment. However, the investigative authorities continue their work to bring to justice all those involved in this terrorist attack.

This incident highlights the importance of strict control and accountability in the military sphere. It also highlights the need to strengthen defense capabilities and improve air defense systems to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
