The program to modernize airliner A330 was adopted in 2004 year, the company decided to create a modification of the liner capable of competing on international airlines with Boeing 787.

In 2014 year started the development of a new modification of the liner, dubbed A330 Neo. The new model A330 Neo should strengthen the position of Airbus in the market of medium-haul wide-body aircraft, but also marks a deepening split between the European and North American aerospace concerns. Closer ties were formed between Boeing and General Electric Aviation, as well as Airbus and Rolls-Royce, with strengthened ties through the supply of many jointly implemented projects.

As expected, Airbus continues to build A330 Neo airliners with Trent 7000 engines developed by Rolls-Royce, an Airliner equipped with new engines should provide fuel savings of 14%, compared with the previous model.

At the same time, the A330-900 Neo model is being developed, which should be received by the airline in the 4 quarter of the 2017 year. According to the production program, all previous models of the A330 family will be replaced with A330-800 Neo and A330-900 Neo. New models have a high range of flights and will be able to serve more than 90% of all routes, including 75-80% of long-haul routes with flights up to 8 hours.

On the new Airbus models, in the course of modernization, the engines will be replaced, the area will be increased and the shape of the wings will be changed, new engine pylons will be installed and the cockpit and avionics will be updated.

The performance and energy costs of competing models A330-800 Neo and Boeing 787-8, A330-900 Neo and Boeing 787-9, are practically in the same range of characteristics. The A330-800 Neo has an 7450 km range, 252 passenger seats (business class 36 and economy class 216), 242 tons take-off weight, 139.09 tons fuel class and 330-900 Neo are equipped with 310 passenger seats (36 business class and 274 economy class) and have a smaller range equal to 6200 km.

Fuel economy in the amount of 14% is achieved through the use of more economical engine models that give the 11% savings and improved wing aerodynamics, providing the 3% improvement indicator.

The production capacities involved in assembling A330 series liners allow the production of 10 airplanes per month, which does not yet allow to fulfill all the orders received from the airlines.

Intense competition between the two companies, forcing both companies to reduce production costs without compromising build quality. Boeing has spent considerable financial resources on developing the Boeing 787 model, which is also complicated by the delay in launching the airliner for three years due to technical and manufacturing problems. The company needs to reach the level of production of 850-1000 airliners before this model pays for all costs.

The choice of Rolls-Royce aircraft engines for the acquisition of the A330 series of Airbuses indicates that the territorial specialization of the suppliers of components for the production of aircraft continues. The growing polarization of leading US and European engine and aircraft manufacturers is also seen in the production of the Airbus A340-500 / 600, A350 and Boeing 747-8, 777 and 777 X models and the trend continues to deepen further.

Airbus is interested in competing between GE and Rolls-Royce to create a more economical and powerful engine, which is what happened in the first selection phase when comparing specifications. Both engines performed well, but the situation changed in the second stage of selection, when aspects of selection were linked to financial costs.

Experts point out that GE was unable to find arguments in its favor, against Rolls-Royce proposals. It was considered more appropriate to consolidate the production of aircraft engines for A330 to Rolls-Royce, given the current program for the production of Trent XWB aircraft engines for A 350.

The key point was the experts' forecast for the purchase of airliners and the plans of Airbus to sell more than 1000 A330 Neo aircraft to the 2030 year, and with the stabilization of the economic situation in the world - 1500 aircraft units. The forecasts of experts regarding the company Boeing, are much more modest.

Air Lease Corp. became the first client to conclude an agreement for the supply of 25 A 330-900 Neo aircraft to be received by the buyer in the 2018 year.

A number of other companies such as AirAsia, Lufthansa concluded an agreement for the supply of airliners. A general order for the supply of AirAsia A330 liners is an 51 aircraft.

The Russian company "Transaero»Signed a protocol of intent on the purchase of 12 aircraft.

CIT and Avolon, who leased airliners, signed an agreement to supply the 15 aircraft to the A330 Neo aircraft, each separately. Experts suggest that for 20 years, A330 Neo series airliners will be able to occupy 25-35% of the potential market with a total number of aircraft in the number of 4000 units.
