The growth of orders for airliners A330

The program to modernize airliner A330 was adopted in 2004, the company decided to create a modification of the liner capable of competing on international airlines with Boeing 787.

In 2014 year started the development of a new modification of the liner, dubbed A330 Neo... The new A330 Neo should strengthen Airbus' position in the mid-range wide-body aircraft market, but also heralds a deepening rift between the European and North American aerospace concerns. Stronger ties have been formed between Boeing and General Electric Aviation, as well as Airbus and Rolls-Royce, with stronger ties through deliveries across multiple joint projects.

As expected, Airbus continues to power the A330 Neo with Rolls-Royce's Trent 7000 engines, with the new engines expected to deliver 14% fuel savings over the previous model.

In parallel, the development of the A330-900 Neo model is underway, which should enter the airlines in the 4th quarter of 2017. According to the production program, all previous models of the A330 family will be replaced by A330-800 Neo and A330-900 Neo. The new models have a high range and will be able to serve more than 90% of all routes, including 75-80% of long-haul routes with a flight duration of up to 8 hours.

In the course of modernization, the engines of the new airbus models will be replaced, the wing area increased and the shape of the wings changed, new engine pylons installed and the cockpit and avionics updated.

Efficiency and energy consumption indicators for competing models A330-800 Neo and Boeing 787-8, A330-900 Neo and Boeing 787-9 are practically in the same performance range. A330-800 Neo has a flight range of 7450 km, 252 passenger seats (36 business class and 216 economy class), takeoff weight 242 tons, fuel capacity 139.09 tons. A330-900 Neo is equipped with 310 passenger seats (36 business class and 274 economy class) and have a shorter flight range of 6200 km.

Fuel savings of 14% are achieved through the use of more fuel efficient engine models that provide 11% savings and improved wing aerodynamics providing a 3% improvement in performance.

The production facilities used for the assembly of the A330 series airliners allow the production of 10 aircraft per month, which does not yet fully fulfill all orders received from airlines.

Intense competition between the two concerns is forcing both companies to cut production costs without compromising assembly quality. Boeing spent significant financial resources on the development of the Boeing 787 model, which is also complicated by the delay in the launch of the airliner by three years due to technical and operational problems. The company needs to reach production levels of 850-1000 airliners before this model will pay off all the costs.

The selection of Rolls-Royce aircraft engines for the A330 series indicates that the territorial specialization of aircraft component suppliers continues. The growing polarization of leading American and European engine and aircraft manufacturers is also seen in the production of the Airbus A340-500 / 600, A350 and Boeing 747-8, 777 and 777 X models and the trend continues to deepen further.

Airbus is keen to compete between GE and Rolls-Royce to create a more fuel efficient and powerful engine, which is what happened in the first phase of its selection of performance comparisons. Both engines performed well, but the situation changed in the second round of selection, when aspects of selection began to be linked to financial costs.

Experts note that GE was unable to find arguments in its favor against Rolls-Royce's proposals. It was deemed more appropriate to assign aircraft engine production for the A330 to Rolls-Royce, given the current Trent XWB aircraft engine program for the A 350.

The key moment was the forecast of experts for the purchase of airliners and the plans of Airbus to sell more than 1000 aircraft of the A330 Neo series by 2030, and with the stabilization of the economic situation in the world, 1500 aircraft. Experts' forecasts regarding Boeing are much more modest.

Air Lease Corp. became the first customer to sign a contract for the delivery of 25 A 330-900 Neo aircraft to be received by the buyer in 2018.

A number of other companies such as AirAsia, Lufthansa concluded agreements for the supply of airliners. The total order for the supply of AirAsia A330s is 51 aircraft.

The Russian company "Transaero»Signed a protocol of intent for the purchase of 12 aircraft.

CIT and Avolon, a jet lease practitioner, have signed an agreement to supply 15 aircraft of the A330 Neo version each. Experts estimate that within 20 years the A330 Neo series airliners will be able to occupy 25-35% of the potential market with a total of 4000 aircraft. Air transport flows, especially in Asia, will soon require large-capacity airliners optimized for the transport of passengers on medium-haul routes.
