Improvement of jet engine technology

Aircraft should be more effective - is a fundamental problem when it comes to the design of jet engines. However, when you create a project and the selection of components for the manufacture of component parts of the engine, the engineers must take into account the economic feasibility of the use of the material for mass production. A new technological chain allows more freedom in the design and to improve production efficiency, as well as carrying out repair processes.

At the last of a 20 25 May 2014, the exhibition ILA Berlin Air Show, a group of scientists from Fraunhofer, Aachen, Germany, presented several components of which were made part of the new technology and can be used in carrying out repair works.

According to experts, the annual transportation of passengers will grow steadily to increase the number of aircraft in commercial companies and individuals. This will significantly increase the load on the environment and create additional environmental problems, so you need air transport consumes less fuel and produces fewer emissions into the atmosphere SO2.

When designing engine assemblies, engineers should be assured of the properties of the material used to manufacture the parts. This means that scientists can produce components that were not previously used in production. This became possible, for example, with the use of "selective laser melting" (SLM). In the course of the production process, the product is gradually formed from the powder component to obtain the desired shape within this particular layer. Wherever laser and radiation exposure is used, the powder first melts and then solidifies to form a solid mass. Thus, the product is formed, gradually layer by layer. Earlier similar details were made by repeated operations with the help of milling from a single piece of metal. This led to large losses of metal and the complexity of obtaining the necessary form of parts.

Technology continues to improve the integration of the operations of melting in a continuous process. The new technology made the nozzle unit (NGV), which consists of six double blades. Earlier, the blades were made, only two planes. Now, the installation time required to build significantly reduced, which allows installation of units faster. Products manufactured by the new technology are lighter by about 30%.

The program includes the development of new technologies and improving the performance of jet engines attended 21 companies to implement new concepts for turbomachinery, making it possible to produce energy more efficiently, with a significant reduction of emissions SO2.

The new technology is applied, also at repair of separate details. If we consider the life cycle, for example, of turbine blades, then after a certain time, their major overhaul is required. Earlier repairs were performed manually with certain operations and took a lot of time. According to the new technology, all operations related to the restoration of the blades are performed automatically and ensure a high quality of repair. An important step towards automation was the development of a software approach, the CAx framework, which allows all repair operations to be performed using a single platform. "CA" stands for computer aided, "x" stands for individual technological production. First, the geometric data of the damaged or worn blades of the blades is removed by the digitization process. Secondly, with the help of milling operations defects are eliminated and, thirdly, by laser radiation, the blade is restored using the laser deposition (LMD) method.

New technology is also used to repair parts of helicopters and airplanes, for the manufacture of blades integrated disks (blisks).

Technology is constantly improving, and has great potential for use in the aviation industry.
