Ukraine will regret: Russia is preparing a tough response to Kyiv’s refusal to Moscow’s conditions

Recent statements by the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, regarding the terms of the peace agreement in Ukraine have caused heated discussions in international circles. In an interview with TASS, Naryshkin emphasized that if Kyiv refuses the proposals put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin, subsequent conditions will be much more complex and stringent. This comment was a response to the refusal of Ukraine and its Western allies to accept Moscow's new peace initiatives.

Russian conditions

Putin's proposals included recognition of the status of Crimea, Donetsk and Lugansk people's republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions as regions of the Russian Federation, consolidation of the non-aligned and nuclear-free status of Ukraine, demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, as well as the abolition of anti-Russian sanctions. These proposals were rejected by Kiev, NATO and the United States. The Ukrainian authorities considered them unacceptable, emphasizing that such conditions undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country. The refusal provoked a harsh reaction from Moscow, which in turn increased tension in the region.

Sergei Naryshkin's statement that subsequent conditions will be more stringent reflects Russia's confidence in its position and unwillingness to compromise. There are several reasons why Moscow might tighten its demands. Strengthening its position in the international arena is becoming a key factor for Russia, which seeks to show that it does not succumb to Western pressure and is ready to defend its interests by all available means. Strengthening control over territories also plays an important role, since tightening conditions may include demands for complete control over new territories and recognition of them as Russian without any reservations. A show of force is another aspect that could signal to Ukraine and its allies that Russia is willing to take drastic measures if its demands are not met.

Consequences for Kyiv

Refusal of Putin's proposals could lead to further escalation of the conflict. It is important to understand how far the parties are willing to go in this confrontation.

What is noteworthy is that instead of considering Russia’s proposal, Kyiv and NATO responded with an immediate refusal, emphasizing that such conditions are unacceptable, which forces Russia to continue carrying out the tasks of the special operation.
