Mi-4. A photo. Characteristics. History.

Mi-4 is a helicopter that can be used in many fields of human activity. This Soviet helicopter was designed and manufactured at the Mile Design Bureau in the 50-ies of the last century. Its main task was to transport transport for the troops of the USSR. This machine had all the characteristics for the transport of goods. Firstly, it had a large cargo bay, in which it is possible to transport goods weighing more than 1,5 tones or transport up to 12 paratroopers with full equipment. In this model, the cargo hatch at the tail of the helicopter was first created. This machine was more than 20 years of the main landing vehicle. To date, this model still stands in the arsenal of China.

History of the design and creation of Mi-4

The first developments were made in the early autumn of the year 1951. The main task before the designers Mil was to create a machine that would not be inferior in quality and characteristics of the foreign analogues helicopters. The main point of support from the designers has become an American helicopter H-19. Frankly, Mi-4 looks very similar to this machine. But the main difference of these machines was that the Soviet version was much larger dimensions and weight.

It should be noted that the development and production of the prototype model of the Mi-4 helicopter occurred in very short lines. In the summer of 52, the first tests of the machine have already begun. The first full-fledged Mi-4 flight was performed in June of 1952 year. In the same year, serial production began in the city of Saratov, and with the release of the 53 year and Kazan factory. The Kazan Helicopter Plant became the main manufacturer of the Mi-4 helicopter until the year 1966, in which the car was withdrawn from production. Operation of this helicopter in the Air Force began in 1953 year. During the same period, the helicopter was also used for civilian purposes, mainly passenger and cargo transportation.

This helicopter model had great authority both in the military sphere and in civil aviation before the appearance of a newer model of the Mi-8 helicopter. This machine was used in almost all areas of the economy, ranging from the transport of passengers and to extinguishing forest fires and polar expeditions. Mi-4 was exported to more than 30 countries around the world. This multipurpose helicopter was also manufactured in China. According to statistics in 1955 year in arming many countries of the world were 555 units Mi-4. Its operation was to the end of 80-ies, finally it ceased in 1988 year after the crash of one of the machines.

Design and testing issues

The main designer of the Mi-4 helicopter was M.N. The Brewers. In the development and testing of the Mi-4 helicopter, designers faced many problems that had not previously occurred in the design of previous models. The Mil Design Bureau had to resort to the help of the LII and TsAGI, which helped to solve the problem of metal fatigue and structural strength. Tasks created the steering screw, as well as the resonance of the entire structure in the ground position. But the most difficult issue was the new propeller blades, which could only withstand up to 150 hours of operation. But in the future it was decided. The life of the blades was brought to three hundred hours, and then to a thousand.

Designers of the geometric dimensions of the screws have been increased, which again led to a new problem: there was a flutter of blades. The decision was to install the beams, but, unfortunately, it does not fully remove this problem. The whole experience, which got constructors in the manufacture of the Mi-4, served them in the future is very good lesson and made to think through all the possible problems in the new models. How to say the workers themselves Mil Design Bureau, Mi-4 helicopter was quite interesting machine.

Characteristics of the Mi-4

Mi-4 was made in a two-story version, which is very similar to American counterpart Sikorski called S-55. Since the new helicopter has a mass that exceeds the Mi-1 4 weight in time, he had to have a sufficiently powerful propulsion. This aircraft was powered by DB-82V, which gave the power take-off in 1700 horsepower, and in normal flight, it reached 1530 horsepower.

Behind the cargo compartment, which is equipped with seats for the Marines was located power plant. The cargo compartment ended hatch, through which you could quite comfortably to boot. For easier lifting and transport Mi-4 cargo was equipped with external load, which is able to withstand the weight of 1300 kg. In the military version of the helicopter it was installed machine gun, which was placed under the fuselage of the machine. Machine guns ran mechanic.

the cockpit was located above the cargo space, and most of it made up of glass surface. Behind the pilots it was located bay, where is located the fuel tank and the gearbox. To the flight range was longer, the car can be equipped with an additional fuel tank, which is placed inside the cargo compartment.

The machine was lifted by a four-bladed main propeller, which in diameter had an 21 meter. All units of the carrier and tail rotors were significantly improved in comparison with the Mi-1. The hinges of the helicopter were equipped with rubber bushings for protection. Screw blades were made from steel spars, which were fastened with rivets. Also they were joined by a wooden frame. The pushing tail propeller consisted of three blades, which were made of wood, in diameter it was 3,6 meters. Most of the moving connections and the cockpit were equipped with anti-icing systems.

Mi-4 became one of the first aerial vehicles that were equipped with steering. control wiring are themselves a system of rods and rockers. Office inside the cockpit was fully duplicated, and fairly new at the time the equipment made it possible to carry out missions at any time of the day and even during adverse weather conditions. Chassis Mi-4 consisted of four pyramidal towers, and at the end of 50-ies started to apply and ski landing gear for winter conditions.

Operation of helicopter Mi-4

Helicopter of the model used is much wider than the Mi-1. This is because it was more spacious and practical, in the cargo can be transported 8 injured people on stretchers or 16 paratroopers. But it was comfortable and the fact that it can be transported more whole loads, for example, such as GAZ and two motorcycles with sidecars. Pre redeveloping small can be used as a rescue vehicle for the carriage of injured or sick persons cargo cabin helicopter.

Total production and operation of Mi-4 was a lot of modifications, upgrades and improvements. On the basis of the standard troop transport helicopter has been designed and manufactured for more than thirty different modifications that have more specialized applications.

Mi-4 (NATO code: Hound - «The Hound") - Soviet multipurpose helicopter developed by the OKB Mil in the early 1950-x.

The first military transport helicopter of the USSR armed forces. It had a similar layout as the American Sikorsky S55, but surpassed it in terms of carrying capacity more than twice. The spacious cargo cabin accommodates 1600kg of cargo or 12 fully equipped paratroopers. Mi4 is the first Soviet helicopter equipped with a cargo hatch in the rear with a descending gangway and flaps.

Lalnost in 46 km amused. Probably a misprint. A distance depends on two parametrov- stock of fuel and quantity of goods

I noticed one mistake at the end: "flight range 46 km". It practically depends on the amount of gasoline; maybe more than 1000 km.
Interesting, but not a complete collection of information on this helicopter.
