The helicopter H5 (the internal name of the developer R5) is designed as an apparatus with improved properties (speed, load capacity, ceiling) in order to replace the Sikorsky R4. The diameter of the main rotor is increased, the fuselage is lengthened, the passenger and pilot seats are located in a tandem. A more powerful engine with an output of 450 hp is installed. For the first time soared in August 1943. The US Army issued an order for 26 machines for testing (under the name YR5A), the first deliveries in February of 1945. Then the order for 100 helicopters (changed for carrying on the stretchers) was followed, of which 34 helicopters were manufactured and delivered.
