Survivors in plane crashes. Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia. ASA.

Next is an article called "The survivors of a plane crash". Atlanta Airport in Georgia is one of the busiest airports in the United States. Also the airport is the base of the local airline" ASA. "Its 83 turboprop aircraft serve the cities of the northeast coast of the United States. In 1995, flights were served by Brazilian aircraft Embraerequipped with electronic equipment.

Captain Edward Genoa and Co-pilot Matthew Warmerd were preparing for the ASE 529 flight to Gulfport, Mississippi. Captain Genoa has been with the company for 7 for years. Passengers of that flight, to a greater extent, were businessmen hardened by flights. This flight was supposed to be one of a thousand in their lives.

21 August 1995 of the year in 12: 25 with a delay of half an hour, they took off.

Co-pilot: I think any pilot would agree that our relationship to the Brazilian aircraft - a mixture of love and hate. At that time it was the fastest turboprop aircraft. He it was not easy to manage.

The plane successfully gained altitude, and the captain turned off the inscription "fasten your seat belts." Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia I flew on autopilot and climbing to cruising altitude 7300 meters. However, to make it to the end and failed.

Second pilot: There was a terrible roar. As if someone had forcefully struck by an aluminum bat bokeh. The aircraft immediately banked to the left.

Passenger: In my sleep, I heard a loud crash and immediately woke up. Out the window, I saw that the left wing of the outer coating was thwarted. I saw parts of the engine. It implies some sort of liquid.

An emergency occurred at an altitude of 5500 meters. Instruments reported to pilots about problems in the left engine. Autopilot turned off and the captain Genoa switched to manual control of the aircraft. At that moment, the descent rate was about 1600 meters per minute. After a few seconds the engine oil leaked from the damaged compartment of the air conditioner and the interior began to fill with smoke.

The pilots did not know that the engine was damaged and tried to restart it in order to level the plane. Then they noticed a signal that the left engine had ignited and shut off the fuel supply to it. With the help of the wheel and levers pilots tried to compensate for the left bank. However, the force that pulled the damaged wing to the left was irresistible.

As the engine and the wing of the aircraft were damaged, the aerodynamic properties were hopelessly broken. Board ASE 529 rapidly lost height. The crew had to focus on instruments that indicated their speed, height and power of the only good engine.

Expert: The aircraft can fly on one engine. But at the side  ASE 529 not only refused the left engine. It is strongly tilted, which significantly violated the aerodynamics of the aircraft.

The pilots managed to slow the catastrophic decline of the aircraft, but did not overcome it. They flew at 360 km / h. Captain Genoa was puzzled. He already had to fly on a similar aircraft with one engine. However, this time it did not go according to plan. It was obvious that the breakdown was very serious. The crew informed the dispatcher of a malfunction, and he immediately gave them a direct route to Atlanta airport. Before the runway had to fly more kilometers 90. To reach the captain of the band experimented with management and trying to slow down the rate of descent. Suddenly, the plane pulled up the nose, and the rate fell to 300 km / h. ASE 529 board was already at the height of 3500 meters. For some time, the pilots managed to control the plane. They informed the passengers that soon will make an emergency landing at the airport in Atlanta.

Over time, the crew realized that they could not make it to Atlanta. The dispatcher indicated to the pilots that they could sit on a local airstrip, which was to 16 km. However, he was so busy with the critical situation on board ASE 529, did not notify the emergency services. The aircraft again made a left turn and heads for the small airport. The co-pilot was trying to find in the directory why engine failure, however, it did not have time. Under the plane was a veil of clouds, and the crew was flying at the rate specified dispatcher.

Passengers: Flight attendant hurriedly began to prepare us for an emergency landing. Then I realized that our situation is bad. However, almost all the passengers were flying a lot. Therefore, no one shouted, there was no panic.

The ASE 529 is still rapidly losing altitude. The airport was two minutes of summer, but the height was only 1280 meters. The captain asked the dispatcher to give them direction vectors to bring the plane to the strip by the shortest route. Suddenly, the plane came out of the clouds, and the pilots saw a shocking picture. No airport was not! Around only the forest and the village. They reported to the dispatcher that their height 580 meters. It struck Manager. Just a moment ago, the height was more 1000 meters. The descent is too fast. And before the band was still 10 kilometers.

Through the window, the flight attendant saw the tops of the trees and ordered the passengers to group. Even the remaining 6 kilometers were too long for a damaged aircraft. Pilots headed to a nearby field to not fall into the forest. In the cockpit sounded different alarms. Speed - 220 km / h. At high speed the plane landed in a field in Bervele Georgia. In a quiet village where people live peacefully, many witnessed the tragedy.

Eyewitness: The plane landed on its belly right on the field near our house. I immediately ran to the scene of an accident, and my Jack phoned the emergency services.

8 minutes have passed since the co-pilot reported an emergency to Atlanta, however, the dispatcher did not convey the message to the rescuers. These few minutes have become a matter of life and death. The local emergency service, caused by eyewitnesses to the tragedy, worked quickly, but it was far away.

After the strike, there was complete silence for a minute. The aircraft fuselage fell apart in half. When the dust settled it turned out that All 29 people miraculously survived

Passenger: The situation was astounding. I could not believe that I was alive. I could not believe it.

Co-pilot: The last thing I remember - it's crackling of broken trees. I do not remember the moment of impact.

However, a new misfortune was sneaking up. Fuel began to flow from damaged gas tanks. From spark ignited fuel vapors. It started a large fire. In just a few seconds, the flames engulfed the entire fuselage. Rear compartment passengers were in a fiery trap. A fault in the plane was engulfed in flames, and the people who were selected through it too burned.

The situation was getting worse and worse. Cockpit heavily deformed. The captain, hitting his head on the steering wheel, lost consciousness. Matthew Warmerdem dislocated his right shoulder and hit the glass with an emergency ax.

  1. Passenger: Some of the passengers riding on the grass. So they tried to extinguish the flames.
  2. Co-pilot: Aviation glass very thick. It is much stronger than the windshield of the car. It is multi-layered. The layers are welded at a high temperature, so the finish is very durable. Each stroke of the ax, I was able to split off a small piece of glass.

One of the passengers came running to help the second pilot. Despite the fact that the plane could explode at any moment, he began to quickly cut the glass. An oxygen tank that was in the cockpit gave a hole, and this aggravated the situation.

At that time, local rescue services were already rushing to the rescue. Suddenly, the plane broke out with a new force, but this did not stop the brave passenger and he continued to break the glass in order to save the pilot. Finally, rescue services arrived at the scene of the accident. By that time, all but the pilots had gotten out of the plane. It was necessary to pull them out.

Firefighter: First of all it was necessary to break through the rear wall of the cab. It was burning. Doors were not there. I grabbed the wall and tore it off. Only then I was able to pull the pilot. He was conscious.

Unfortunately, Captain Edward Genoa, without regaining consciousness, died of suffocation. Disaster survivors with fractures and burns were immediately taken to the hospital.

Doctor: I woke up after a night shift. When I came to the hospital to have taken a few people. As soon as I opened the door and immediately smelled jet fuel.

All day long, Dr. Mitchell treated the burned passengers. Unfortunately, a week later, some passengers died from severe burns.

The National Transportation Safety Authority was investigating the disaster. There were several groups that explored various parts of a fallen plane. One of them was engaged in propellers.

Investigator: We went to the crash site, and as usual looked around to determine where to look for fragments. From the plane took off part of the propeller. We found it close to the dirt. It could be seen clear signs of cracking. These cracks may have formed from metal fatigue.

Selection of air crashes 1

The pilots did not even suspect that the cause of the engine failure was the crack in the propeller blades. But investigators it was not a novelty. 4 years prior to the disaster another Brazilian company «ASA» crashed in the woods of Georgia. Then 23 killing all people on board. The investigation revealed that the cause of the collapse of steel structural problems propeller control unit. In the accident blamed the manufacturer «Hamilton Standard». In March 1994 years 17 for months before the incident with the flight ASE 529, the blades of the other two aircraft broke down due to cracks in the metal. This is indicative of serious problems with propellers «Hamilton Standard».

The government has instructed to check all 15000 propellers in service. The investigator took the damaged propeller blade of the ASE 529 board to Atlanta airport. From there he went to the Washington lab. The next morning he was examined under a scanning microscope. Traces of the presence of chlorine, a corrosive substance that corroded the inner walls of the blade, were found. There was a question: how did chlorine get there?

In the two previous propeller incidents, corrosion was also caused by the presence of chlorine on the blades. The researchers saw that two cracks formed on the inner surface of the blade, which joined in the same fracture. It increased until it surrounded the whole blade. On this line she fell off. But they also noticed traces of grinding. Investigators went to Hamilton Standard to obtain propeller maintenance reports. Investigating the repair protocols of the blade, they paid attention to the technician who last performed the work. It was a young man who worked in the repair shop propellers. Investigators found out how the screw passed the test.

The blades of the propeller are hollow. To balance the inside lay the load, and then cover the cavity with a stopper soaked in chlorine. It was chlorine that caused the corrosion of metal. But the technician found no signs of corrosion. Then, as expected, he polished the surface of the blade. The commission found that by polishing the blades, the workers unintentionally destroyed the signs of cracks. Therefore, after an ultrasound check they did not reveal them. Hamilton Standard’s management has been asked to increase accountability.

In conclusion, the investigators said: the reason for failure was the crack in the metal fatigue. It is formed from multiple corrosion points which have not been detected due to inadequate and inefficient control. Also, the investigators noted that the main cause of death of many passengers was a fire. Fuel was burning in the engine and ignite if it will spread. Only one way out - to use less fuel oil. In 1984, the Federal Aviation Administration and NASA have already tested the new, safer fuel. However, the experience was not successful.

Since 50, US military aircraft have been using safer JP-5 jet fuel.

Judge: The main reason for the civil sector does not become less flammable fuel is its availability and cost. Manufacturing JP-5 cost is quite expensive. In the end, everything comes down to money.

Unfortunately, until solutions are found, tragedies like the tragedies of the ASE 529 flight will occur. After the plane crashed, everyone remained alive, but the fire that was caused led to the death of some passengers. Of the 29 people flying the ill-fated voyage, the 10 people died.

As for the propellers, flight ASE 529 was the last one to fly a propeller. Since then, the process of repairing and inspecting them has become much more stringent.
