9K96 “Redoubt” (or Polyent-Redut) is a sea-based anti-aircraft missile system with a vertical launch installation, which is used for corvette, frigate, and destroyer ships. It is installed on the ships of the latest generation of the Russian Navy.

History

The Central Design Bureau "Almaz" in 1990 began the development of the C-400 "Triumph" air defense missile system, which was used to replace the C-300 air defense system in the air defense forces of different versions. The new complex must use all the versions of the missiles used in the C-300 and the 9М96 and 9М96 M missiles specially designed for the new Fakel missile system. New missiles differ in such features:

  • super maneuverability;
  • warhead with a controlled defeat field;
  • active radar homing on the final leg of the flight.
  • A new ground defense complex "Vityaz" was created on the basis of 9М96, and on the basis of the latter - the Polimet / Redut shipboard anti-aircraft missile system with the same types of missiles.

For the first time, information about the new air defense system appeared after the launch of the “Novik” patrol ship of the 12441 project in 1997. Before the bridge in the nose of the superstructure was supposed to install four modules for the installation of vertical launch of eight missiles each. But the adoption of the C-400 complex was delayed until the 2007 year, with the result that Novik was left without an air defense system and was not fully completed (until 2015, it was planned to be rebuilt into a training ship).

The Redut complex was also planned to be installed on new 20380 corvettes, but as a result of the missile’s unreadiness, the lead ship was used with the Kortik rocket and artillery complex. “Redoubt was installed on subsequent ships of the family (projects 20380, 20385). The same complex with a large number of UPV modules was used on new frigates of the 22350 project.

Vladimir Korolev 8 February 2019 of the year spoke about the completion of the state tests of the Polymer / Redut air defense system. It was assumed that he will go into service in the first half of 2019.

Design features

The complex includes a radar "Polyment" with four phased arrays. The number of simultaneously targeted targets of the enemy - 16 (it turns out, four for each HEADLIGHT).

The missiles are located in vertical launch installations, which consist of modules of four or eight cells each. The 1 transport and launch container with a medium-range or long-range missile (9М96Е, 9М96Е2) or four short-range missiles (9М100) is in the cell. It is worth noting that at startup a “cold” start is applied. The rocket is ejected from a vertically located transport and launch container with a charge of compressed air to an altitude of 30 meters, turning with the help of a gas-dynamic system towards the target. Due to this, the minimum interception range is significantly reduced. The gas-dynamic system also provides the rocket with super-maneuverability and can increase the rocket overload by 20g in 0,025 seconds.

On the march trajectory for the 9М96Е, 9М96Е2 missiles, inertial-command guidance is used, whereas on the final segment there is active radar homing. At the same time, the 9М100 short-range rocket is equipped with an infrared homing head. Immediately after the launch of the rocket, a target is captured.

According to computer simulation and field tests, the 9М96Е and 9М96Е2 missiles with a high probability (70%) provide an accurate hit to the head of the tactical missile, while in the other 30%, the deviation is not more than a few meters. The probability of hitting a plane is 80%, while the helicopter is 90%.

Thanks to the multipoint initiation, the warhead weighing 24 kg has a controlled destruction field.

  1. Corvette Project 20380

On these corvettes, starting with the 2-th serial ship, in front of the bridge in the superstructure, instead of the Kortik-M SIRK, three modules of the Redut system are installed, each containing four cells (total of twelve cells). The ammunition is the 48 9МNNXX missiles or a different combination of 100М9Е and 96М9 missiles within the full capacity of UVP and 100 12М9Е missiles.

Corvette "Resistant" project 20380

The newspaper "Izvestia" reported that on the corvettes of the 20380 project and on its further modifications due to lack of space, the standard radar of target illumination "Polyment" is not used. As a result, on the marching segment, the trajectory of a long-range and medium-range missile goes without correction of the trajectory on inertial autopilot and when intercepting an enemy’s maneuvering target, the homing head of the missile that reached the intercept point often does not detect the target. All 3 tests of the Redoubt anti-aircraft missile system with the 2012М9М missile (96 from the Corrective Corvette and the 2 from the ground installation) conducted in 1 ended in failure. The 9М100 short-range missile, which initially captures the target with a special infra-red homing head, is absolutely functional.

At the beginning of the summer of 2014, the Cornette "Savvy" of the Baltic Fleet effectively repelled the attack of a cruise target missile launched from a P-257 rocket boat using the Redut air defense system. As a result, the target was successfully destroyed. Apparently, this was the first successful use of the Redoubt complex from a warship.

  1. Corvette Project 20385

On these corvettes, the Red Army air defense missile system was transferred from the bow to the rear part (the air defense missile unit of the UCMS stelab system was installed in their place). Four modules of four cells are installed in a disproportionate way between the helipad and the hangar (16 cells in total). Ammunition - 64 missiles 9М100 or 16 missiles 9М96Е, or different combinations of missiles 9М100 and 9М96Е within the full capacity of the CIP.

3. Frigates project 22350

On these frigates, in front of the bridge in the superstructure, four modules of the Redut system are installed, with eight cells each (32 cells are obtained). Combat reserve - 128 9М100 or 32 missiles 9М64Е or different combinations of 9М100 and 9М96Е missiles within the full capacity of the ATC.

Exploitation

According to reports from 02.06.2014 and from 19.09.2014, when going out to sea, the crew of the “Intelligent” Corvette of the 20380 project of the Baltic Fleet performed tasks to repel the missile attack of a potential enemy. Both times, a cruise missile was launched as a target, which was launched from the P-257 rocket boat. Target shooting was carried out from the Redut sea-based anti-aircraft missile system. A rocket launched from a corvette both times hit the target. The shooting took place in the conditions of a serious jamming situation with the use of REB by the enemy.

According to a report from 11.06.2014, the crew of the Corinth Soiropitelny conducted a tactical exercise for the first time in the Baltic Fleet maritime test range, the purpose of which is to defeat a surface target with an anti-aircraft missile. The shooting took place with the use of the Redut missile anti-aircraft complex at a sea base of a probable enemy imitating ship. A rocket launched from a corvette successfully hit a naval target at a given distance. Shooting was carried out in a complex noise situation with the use of electronic warfare by the enemy.

According to a report from 25.08.2016 of the year, during the tactical exercises, the Corvette “Savvy”, using the Redut air defense system, struck a target that simulates an anti-ship missile. This was told by the Western Military District. The target missile was released from the Geyser small rocket ship. The report notes that the shooting was carried out in a difficult jamming environment with the use of electronic warfare opponents.
