3 reasons why Europe will make concessions to Russia

Only a week was enough for Putin to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the French President. Consider three main reasons for this diplomatic onslaught.

  1. It is necessary to save the treaty with Iran

After the French president expressed his intentions to attend the annual economic forum in St. Petersburg, many were surprised. This statement was made against the backdrop of the case of the poisoning of a Russian spy in Great Britain, after which an international scandal erupted and the expulsion of diplomats.

However, when Emmanuel Macron arrived in Russia on a two-day visit on Thursday, no one was surprised. Over the recent months, there have been many changes in the sphere of international politics.

Last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Russia. At a meeting in Sochi, the political leader Putin greeted an expensive guest with a bouquet of white roses.

According to experts, these two visits are interrelated, and their cause is hidden in the "Trump factor". In particular - in the desire of Europe to save an important deal with Iran, which closely cooperates with Russia.

Earlier this month Trump announced the US withdrawal from the nuclear treaty with Iran under the pretext that it was not radical enough. Soon, the US announced the imposition of sanctions against Iran, whose influence could affect European enterprises.

The European Union, China and Russia did not follow the example of the United States and support an international treaty, the goal of which is to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. This issue became the number one topic during the visit of the French President to Russia.

"The agreement with Iran has chances to become a real breakthrough for Russia, as it suddenly turned out that France remains in its previous positions," explained Tatyana Kastueva-Jean from the French Institute of International Relations in an interview with Bloomberg.

  1. Cold front from the Atlantic

Unequal views on the Iranian treaty are by no means the only stumbling block between the emerged between the United States and Europe, for which Europe needs to turn to Russia.

Discontent with a number of European states caused Tramp's intention to impose a duty on European steel. In addition, the US decided to postpone the embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, which caused bloody riots and the death of dozens of people in the Gaza Strip.

"With such friends and enemies are not needed," the head of the European Council, Donald Tusk, commented in a distinctive manner on the recent actions of the Trump administration.

The Russian leadership of a quarrel in the Atlantic space is only at hand, as it will allow Moscow to be advertised as a suitable partner for Europe.

From the Kremlin's point of view, the crisis will help them penetrate deeper into the North Atlantic Alliance.

"If the opinions coincide, then the states are already close to each other" - with such comments on the meeting of Putin and Merkel, the Kremlin adviser on foreign policy issues Yuri Ushakov spoke.

Russian state media reacted even more frankly: in an interview with Channel One, the pro-Kremlin analyst called the countries of Europe "useless", adding that nobody thinks with their opinion.

"Let them understand that their American partners are forcing them to break off relations with those countries with whom it would be beneficial for them to cooperate, such as with Russia," the analyst said.

"Putin is well aware of the split in the western camp, and if someone shows slack in it, he will use it to make a profit," explains Tatyana Kastueva-Jean.

  1. Gas pipeline and growing pains

The issue of sanctions imposed by Europe after the military invasion of Ukraine is not even raised. The United States threatened a new round of sanctions against Moscow, and a number of European states are ready to introduce measures against illegal cash flows from the Russian Federation.

However, if you listen to Germany, it turns out that there is no political component in the energy sector at all. Berlin continues to defend the project to expand the Nord Stream, a gas pipeline that transports blue fuel across the Baltic Sea to the German market.

The German government calls this project "island of cooperation", but expansion plans have been severely criticized by the authorities of the United States, Poland, Ukraine and the Baltic Sea countries.

The Trump administration "tightens the nuts" against Germany. The Wall Street Journal says that Trump demanded that Merkel refrain from supporting the expansion of the "Nord Stream", promising in return a lucrative agreement on trade cooperation, which has every chance to become decisive for the German automotive industry. This happened at a meeting of the two leaders, which took place in April this year.

Later, US officials began to threaten the leadership of the Northern Stream with the possible introduction of new sanctions.

In Germany and the European Union such pressure is regarded as an unprecedented interference in the affairs of domestic policy. According to some experts, this gives grounds to leave open channels for dialogue with Russia.

Angela Merkel insists on continuing the transit of gas through the territory of Ukraine. Thus Germany defends in negotiations on the "Nord Stream" favorable conditions for Ukraine, but not for the United States.
