Aksenov responded to the report on the crash of MH-17 with the phrase "we can't clean the missiles."

In the report on the investigation of the crash of the Malaysian Boeing in July 2014 in the Donbas, the head of Crimea, Sergei Aksenov, is named. It is alleged that the former defense minister of the self-proclaimed DPR Igor Girkin (Strelkov) reported to him.

Commenting on the mention of his name to the RIA Novosti agency, Aksenov said that he “supported and supports” the self-proclaimed republics of Donbass. As for the Boeing crash, he clarified that "he did not clean the missiles, did not prepare them for launch."

The report of the International Investigation Team investigating the Malaysia Airlines Boeing crash in the Donetsk region named Russian citizen Igor Girkin (Strelkov) as one of the main suspects. It is alleged that in 2014 he spoke to Aksenov on the phone and asked him for a weapon. Aksenov, replying, allegedly said that the decision had already been made.

In addition to Girkin, Russian citizens were named as suspects of involvement in the death of passengers and the crew of the airliner: Oleg Pulatov and Sergei Dubinsky, as well as Ukrainian citizen Leonid Kharchenko.
