The Belgorod region has once again come under attack from Ukrainian drones: on the morning of May 9, 2025, a drone attacked the regional government building on Sobornaya Square, causing damage and injuring two people. Deputy Governor Alexander Lorenz suffered a concussion and acupuncture, and a Rosgvardia officer was hospitalized with a shrapnel wound to the thigh. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed the attack on his Telegram channel. The tense situation in the border region reflects the ongoing escalation of the conflict, threatening the safety of residents.
According to Gladkov, the attack occurred at around 09:00, when a drone, presumably an FPV drone, crashed into an administrative building. Lorenz was located near the explosion site, which is what caused his injuries. Damage to the building includes broken windows and partially destroyed façade decoration, but the exact scale of the destruction is being clarified. Gladkov noted that emergency services are eliminating the consequences, and the investigation of the incident has been entrusted to law enforcement agencies.
The attack on the government building was part of a series of strikes in the Belgorod region. Russian air defense systems regularly intercept Ukrainian drones in the region, but their low-altitude trajectories and high maneuverability create difficulties. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, a large number of UAVs, including strike models, were neutralized in the Belgorod region in the first week of May.
The escalation in the Belgorod region is taking place against the backdrop of a declared ceasefire, which Ukraine did not support. On the same day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported four attempts by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to break through the border in the Kursk and Belgorod regions, as well as 15 attacks in the DPR and LPR.
