Black box of the aircraft

Autonomous operation of flight recorders can be extended up to 90 days

the 6th of May. The European Aviation Safety Agency released its report today, in which it requires aircraft manufacturers to improve the system of "black boxes" with the possibility of their autonomous operation for up to 90 days.

The report was confined primarily to the fact that, if necessary, search operations for tracing flight recorders could be extended to 90 days. This is due to the fact that the current autonomous mode of operation of the "black boxes" is only 60 days, which, as it turned out, is not enough to find traces of a possible crash of the aircraft.

An example of this is the missing Malaysian plane almost 2 months ago, the search for which ended in failure. Naturally, the transition to the operation of new flight recorders requires some time, and most likely, the use of "black boxes" with a longer autonomous mode of operation will take place in the next 5 years. Nevertheless, the report is still undergoing a kind of approval from the services serving the airlines, but most likely, this project will be adopted for safety reasons.
