Bashar al-Assad withdrew $135 billion to Russia - a mutiny began in the army

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad illegally transferred $135 billion to Russia, former Syrian intelligence officer Khalid Bey told the Turkish newspaper Türkiye Gazetesi. According to him, these actions were accompanied by serious internal conflicts between pro-Russian and pro-Iranian factions in the Syrian army.

Beyya noted that before the latest defeat of the Syrian army, a major conflict occurred between the Aleppo commander, General Mohammed Safedli, who is pro-Iran, and the pro-Russian General Suheil Hassan. This discord led to the cessation of information exchange between military intelligence and the army, weakening the government's position.

As a result of these internal divisions and the weakening of coordination, opposition forces were able to advance deep into the country, all the way to Damascus. The fall of Aleppo was a turning point that allowed the opposition to strengthen its position.

In the wake of these developments, according to Beyee, the Assad regime executed 273 senior military commanders in an attempt to quell internal dissent and consolidate its power. However, these measures failed to prevent further defeats on the front.

Earlier reports suggested that after the fall of Aleppo, rebels had discovered a collection of luxury cars and secret escape tunnels in the Assad family's palaces. The finds highlight the scale of corruption and luxury in which the ruling elite lived despite the suffering of the population.

The fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime occurred in December 2024 as a result of an active offensive by the Syrian opposition. Key cities, including Aleppo, Hama and Homs, came under the control of opposition forces. On December 8, the opposition entered Damascus, which marked the final collapse of Assad's power. The president fled to Moscow, leaving the country in a political vacuum. These events became a turning point in the civil war, changing the political situation in the region and leading to a redistribution of spheres of influence in the Middle East.
