The situation in Syria continues to escalate: armed opposition groups have made significant gains in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. According to Turkish and local sources, militants have gone on the offensive, capturing strategically important facilities that were previously under the control of government forces and the Kurdish YPG (the Syrian wing of the Kurdistan Workers' Party).
Among the opposition's most significant achievements is the capture of Aleppo International Airport, where the Nayrab airbase is located. The airport, previously handed over to Kurdish forces by the Syrian government, is now under the complete control of the opposition. The opposition also took control of the Kweires military airfield, where a significant number of tanks and armored vehicles were captured.
Syrian opposition forces have blocked the strategic Aleppo-Raqqa highway, which the YPG used to transport resources, and rebels have taken control of the towns of Nubl and Zahra in northwestern Aleppo, and have launched an offensive on the Tel Rifaat area, from where the YPG had already begun to retreat.
The situation in Idlib developed no less rapidly. Almost the entire province in 72 hours of fighting has left the control of Syrian government forces and Iranian-backed groups. The retreat of Assad's army from the southern regions of Idlib allowed the opposition to concentrate its efforts on advancing to the strategically important city of Hama.
Meanwhile, the retreat of the Syrian army is also accompanied by the transfer of a number of strategic facilities to the Kurdish YPG forces. In addition to the Aleppo airport, the Tel Hasil and Tel Arn districts, as well as part of the Aleppo industrial zone, were handed over to them.
