British aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales was unable to sail for NATO exercise Steadfast Defender 2024 due to a malfunction

The UK faced a problem when both its aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, were unavailable for combat missions due to technical faults. This situation has caused considerable concern given the huge sums spent on the construction of these ships, which seem to spend more time in the docks than at sea.

HMS Queen Elizabeth was recently sent for repairs due to problems with her propellers, and now HMS Prince of Wales has also encountered an unexplained problem which has prevented her from sailing on her scheduled voyage from Portsmouth. These incidents highlight the challenges the Royal Navy faces in maintaining the combat readiness of its flagship fleet.

Britain's plans to send a carrier strike group to participate in NATO's biggest exercise since the Cold War, Steadfast Defender 2024, have been thwarted by technical glitches. This calls into question the country's ability to demonstrate its maritime power on the international stage, as well as the effectiveness of investments in the defense sector.

HMS Prince of Wales, commissioned in 2019, has been experiencing ongoing technical problems.
