On June 24, 2025, Ukrainian singer Slava Kaminska, former lead singer of the band NeAngely, posted a photo on social media that sparked heated discussions. In the picture, she is pictured next to a man who bears a striking resemblance to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled the country in 2014. The photo, according to Kaminska, was taken in the Canary Islands.
Viktor Yanukovych, who served as Ukraine’s president from 2010 to 2014, fled the country during the Revolution of Dignity and has since resided in Russia, presumably in Rostov-on-Don or the Moscow region. Since his escape, he has been the subject of a number of criminal cases in Ukraine, including charges of treason and illegally transporting people across the border. In 2019, Kyiv’s Podolsky District Court sentenced him in absentia to 13 years in prison, and in 2024 to 15 years for inciting desertion. Yanukovych is under sanctions by the EU, the US, and Canada, making his appearance in the EU, including the Canary Islands, legally problematic.
A photograph of Kaminskaya, allegedly taken at the Pacha club on the island of Ibiza (although the singer indicated the Canary Islands), caused a wave of controversy.
