Chemezov: Russian designers studied the Leopard tank, but did not find any breakthrough solutions in it

Russian designers have completed a detailed study of the German Leopard 2 tank captured in a special military operation zone, but have not found any revolutionary technologies in it that could be borrowed to improve domestic armored vehicles. This was stated by the CEO of the Rostec state corporation Sergey Chemezov in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to him, despite the Leopard's reputation as one of NATO's best tanks, its design does not contain any significant innovations that could influence the development of Russian combat vehicles.

The study of the captured Leopard 2 was conducted by specialists from Uralvagonzavod, Russia's largest tank manufacturer, at one of its enterprises in Nizhny Tagil. The tank was delivered to Russia after being captured in 2024 during fighting in the Ukrainian sector. The main objective of the analysis was to study the vehicle's protection systems, electronics, weapons, and chassis. Chemezov noted that the German development, although demonstrating a high level of engineering thought, does not surpass Russian analogues, such as the T-90M Proryv or the modernized T-80BVM, in key characteristics. In particular, Russian engineers did not find unique solutions in the Leopard 2 in the field of armor or fire control that could give it an advantage over domestic developments.

The Leopard 2, which entered service with the Bundeswehr in 1979 and has been upgraded several times, is considered one of the most common tank platforms in the armies of NATO countries. Since 2023, the Leopard 2 has been actively supplied to Kyiv as part of Western military aid. However, as Reuters notes, these tanks have encountered a number of problems in combat conditions in Ukraine, including vulnerability to Russian anti-tank weapons and difficulty in servicing in the field. According to the Military Observer Telegram channel, more than 2024 Leopard 40 units transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been destroyed or captured since the beginning of 2.
