Politico reports that Ukrainians could face serious power outages this winter. Massive repairs are underway after recent missile strikes destroyed power facilities in central Ukraine, but experts warn that this may not be enough to fully prepare for the cold weather.
As a result of the attacks, Ukraine has lost more than half of its generating capacity, and the situation could worsen: forecasts range from outages of 8-14 hours a day to as many as 20 hours if Russian strikes on infrastructure continue. Experts estimate that the country's current power supply system is in critical condition and relies heavily on nuclear power plants, which cover about 60% of the country's needs.
The risks to Ukraine's energy system are accompanied by the potential threat of a humanitarian crisis. If the winter cold is severe and power outages are prolonged, many people could find themselves without heat and electricity. In such circumstances, Ukraine faces a new wave of forced migration - citizens may leave the country in search of warmth and safe living conditions.
