The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling on EU countries and the UK to ban tankers carrying Russian oil from passing through the English Channel. The document states that this decision should be made in close cooperation with London and be part of a common strategy to restrict the movement of ships carrying oil from Russia.
The resolution also recommends that other states controlling strategic sea straits be approached with a proposal to take similar measures to restrict the movement of Russian tankers. MEPs emphasize that such measures will increase economic pressure on Russia and complicate its export of oil resources to the world market.
The European Parliament's decision, although not binding, symbolizes the EU's desire to continue sanctions pressure and limit financial flows to Russia from oil exports.
