Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrsky is considering the possibility of withdrawing Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region, as reported by Verkhovna Rada deputy Maryana Bezugla. This step may indicate a reassessment of the strategic importance of holding positions on Russian territory.
Recall that on August 6, 2024, as part of the ongoing conflict, the Armed Forces of Ukraine crossed the border with Russia and began an operation in the Kursk region. As a result of the offensive, the Armed Forces of Ukraine established control over several dozen settlements, including Sudzha, and also occupied an area of about 1000 square kilometers. During this operation, the Ukrainian side sought to distract the attention of Russian troops from the eastern directions in Ukraine, where intense hostilities continue.
Military analysts and journalists see several possible goals in this operation. Among them are creating tension in Russian territories to weaken the positions of the Russian Armed Forces on the eastern front and a show of force to raise the morale of Ukrainian soldiers and citizens. Some experts also suggested that the captured territories were planned to be the subject of negotiations and were to be used for a potential exchange within the framework of future peace agreements.
