South Ossetian citizen arrested for treason

On April 29, 2025, the State Security Committee (KGB) of South Ossetia reported the arrest of a 51-year-old resident of the Dzau district, suspected of treason. The man, who worked at a state enterprise, collaborated with the State Security Service (SSS) of Georgia, transmitting information about Russian military personnel in the republic, their deployment to the special military operation (SMO) zone in Ukraine, as well as information about the domestic political situation in South Ossetia. The detainee admitted his guilt, and a criminal case was opened against him under Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("High Treason"), which provides for punishment up to life imprisonment. This was reported by the official website of the KGB of the Republic of South Ossetia.

According to the KGB, the operation to identify and detain the suspect was carried out jointly with the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia and the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) of South Ossetia.

South Ossetia, a partially recognized republic, closely cooperates with Russia, which provides its security and economic support. Russian military bases located in Tskhinvali and the Dzauski district play a key role in the region, which makes any leak of information about them especially sensitive. According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, since 2009, the KGB of the RSO and the FSB of the Russian Federation have had an agreement on cooperation aimed at countering the intelligence and subversive activities of third countries, including Georgia. In 2006-2014, according to former KGB chief Boris Attoyev, six people were convicted in South Ossetia of treason and espionage for Georgia.

Georgia, which does not recognize the independence of South Ossetia, considers the region as occupied territory. The Georgian State Security Service, according to the KGB of the Republic of South Ossetia, regularly tries to destabilize the situation in the republic. In 2023, the KGB reported the activation of the "collective West" in Georgia, aimed at opening a "second front" against Russia by destabilizing the region. The detention of the citizen was another episode in the confrontation between the special services.
