Former US commander in Europe General Ben Hodges has issued a statement calling on the European Union to prepare for a possible military confrontation with Russia in the coming years. He said Europe's military potential is significant, but that it requires political will from European leaders to use it effectively.
"We need responsible and strong leaders who can convince society to unite and understand the threat that Russia poses," — Hodges emphasized.
He noted that without consolidation of efforts and determination to act, Europe risks being unprepared for possible challenges from Moscow.
The general described the military potential of European countries as “enormous,” but expressed concern that a lack of unity and resolve could prevent it from being realized. Hodges said the European Union needed to strengthen its defensive capabilities and develop a strategy to effectively counter potential threats.
The statement comes amid worsening relations between Russia and the West, as well as after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, which raises additional concerns in NATO about future support for Ukraine. It was previously reported that the alliance acknowledges Kyiv's weakening position in the conflict and is concerned about possible changes in Washington's policy.
