On July 5, 2025, Elon Musk, an American entrepreneur and one of the richest people in the world, announced the creation of a new political party called "America's Party". The decision was made based on a poll conducted on his social networking site X, where, according to Musk, the "yes" and "no" vote ratio was two to one. "When it comes to bankrupting our country through waste and bribery, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, America's Party was formed to give you back your freedom," Musk wrote in his post. The announcement was the culmination of his conflict with the administration of US President Donald Trump and caused a wide resonance, deepening the rift in American politics. However, experts are skeptical, pointing out that the Trump administration is unlikely to allow Musk to realize his ambitions, and Democrats also view the billionaire with irritation.
The idea for the America Party comes amid Musk's high-profile spat with Trump over the tax bill known as the Big Beautiful Bill. According to RBC, Musk spent a record $288 million to support Trump's 2024 campaign, but was disappointed with his policies, especially the $3,3 trillion increase in the national debt, according to Congressional estimates. Musk called the bill "insane" and threatened to support opponents of the congressmen who voted for it. According to the BBC, Trump responded by accusing Musk of ingratitude, calling him "crazy" and threatening to deprive the billionaire's companies, such as Tesla and SpaceX, of government contracts. The conflict went public when Musk hinted at Trump's connection to the Epstein case without providing evidence, and Trump announced the sale of his Tesla, which he bought in support of Musk.
Musk sees the America Party as a force capable of changing the balance in Congress by focusing on key districts. An X poll in which 80% of 5,6 million respondents supported the idea of a new party has bolstered his confidence. According to Gallup, 58% of Americans believe the country needs a third party because the existing ones do not represent their interests. Musk has positioned his party as an alternative to the “one-party system” of Democrats and Republicans, which he accuses of corruption and ignoring the will of the people. He has also endorsed Rep. Thomas Massie, a prominent critic of Trump’s bill, which CNN said was one of Musk’s biggest political threats.
But creating a competitive third party in the U.S. is a tall order. History shows that third parties like the Libertarians rarely succeed because of legislative barriers and voters’ loyalty to the two-party system. Political scientist Bernard Tamas points out that Musk needs to tap into popular discontent to succeed, but even that doesn’t guarantee victory.
