Tasnim news agency reports that Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has announced the possibility of constructing the Zangezur corridor through the Armenian territory of Syunik, which would connect the main section of Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan. This statement has caused serious concern in Iran, which is categorically against the creation of such a route.

Iran has repeatedly expressed its firm position against any changes to the borders in the region and the creation of transport corridors such as Zangezur. Tehran fears that this could destabilize the situation on its borders and affect security. It is reported that senior Iranian officials have previously clearly informed Russia of their position on this issue, and the Russian statement has caused surprise in Tehran.

Despite these concerns, there are voices in Azerbaijani society that no one will ask Tehran’s opinion in resolving this issue.
