In October, Israel carried out an airstrike near the Russian Khmeimim military base in Syria, which provoked a protest from Moscow. According to the Russian president's special representative for Syria, Alexander Lavrentyev, the strike hit a facility near the airbase and, despite the fact that Khmeimim itself was not damaged, Moscow assessed such actions as unacceptable. About this сообщает "RIA News".
According to Lavrentyev, Israel refrained from attacking the base directly, fully understanding the possible negative consequences that such a step could have caused.
He explained that the strike was likely aimed at a warehouse or building nearby, but even such proximity to a Russian facility is seen by Moscow as a serious challenge.
"Israel did indeed carry out one airstrike in the immediate vicinity of Khmeimim. That is, it did not strike directly at the airbase, because this, naturally, would have had very negative consequences, including for Israel. They understand this very well. According to some information, the strike was carried out on some warehouse or premises," - Lavrentiev stated.
The Khmeimim Air Base is a Russian military base located in Syria, near the city of Latakia. It was established in 2015 and has become a key point for the Russian Armed Forces' operations in the Middle East, especially during the conflict in Syria. The base is equipped with modern infrastructure, can accommodate aircraft of various classes, including fighters and bombers, as well as air defense systems. Khmeimim serves as an important stronghold for air support of the Syrian government forces and for the protection of Russian interests in the region.
