Keith Kellogg, appointed by US President-elect Donald Trump as a special representative for Ukraine and Russia, expressed confidence that the conflict in Ukraine can be resolved in the coming months with the active participation of the new administration. In an interview with Fox News, Kellogg noted that Trump has the determination and the plan of action that can lead to a speedy end to the hostilities.
Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general, previously served as national security adviser in the Trump administration. In June 2024, he presented a plan to resolve the conflict that would continue arms sales to Ukraine if talks with Russia began. If Moscow refused to engage in dialogue, the plan would increase support for Kyiv.
Kellogg's appointment as special envoy for Ukraine and Russia confirms Trump's intention to actively participate in resolving the conflict. On his social network Truth Social, Trump stated:
"I am thrilled to nominate General Keith Kellogg to serve as Assistant to the President and Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia. Together, we will secure peace through strength and make America and the world safe again!"
But Kellogg's proposed plan has drawn mixed reactions. According to CNN, it proposes easing anti-Russian sanctions in exchange for a ceasefire, which could be met with resistance in the United States and among its allies.
