Kremlin: Zelensky's 30-day ceasefire proposal unfeasible

On April 29, 2025, Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov commented on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's initiative for an immediate 30-day ceasefire, stating that such a proposal is not feasible without resolving all the nuances. Peskov said this in response to journalists' questions.

Zelensky, speaking in an evening address on April 28, rejected Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal for a short-term ceasefire from May 8 to 11 to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, calling it a manipulation to ensure silence during the parade in Moscow. Instead, he insisted on a “complete and unconditional” ceasefire for at least 30 days as the basis for diplomacy. That proposal was made earlier in March at talks in Jeddah, where the United States proposed a similar move, which was supported by Kiev but not by Russia.

Peskov noted that there are many nuances around the settlement of the conflict that require detailed discussion. In particular, he pointed to the problem of Kyiv's control over its armed forces, which complicates guarantees of compliance with the ceasefire.

The Russian side has repeatedly stressed the need to take into account its interests in order to achieve peace. In March, Putin said the ceasefire should lead to long-term peace, not be a temporary pause. This demand includes discussion of security guarantees and the neutral status of Ukraine, which Kiev has previously rejected. Zelensky, in turn, insists on the return of all territories, including Crimea, and NATO membership, which Russia considers unacceptable.
