According to unconfirmed reports published by the Militarist Telegram channel, citing Western sources, Laos may be preparing to send a limited contingent of troops to Russia to assist in operations near the Kursk region, not far from the border with Ukraine. No official statements have been received from the authorities in Moscow or Vientiane on this matter, which makes the information a subject of speculation. Nevertheless, the rumors have generated lively discussion in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the strengthening of Russian-Laotian relations, especially in the military sphere.
Russian-Laotian military cooperation intensified after Laotian Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith's visit to Russia in 2016. Since then, the countries have strengthened cooperation in personnel training and humanitarian demining. In 2018–2019, Russian specialists carried out work to clear the province of Bolikhamxai of ammunition left over from the American bombings of 1964–1973. In May 2025, Moscow and Vientiane updated military cooperation agreements, including participation in exercises and demining. These agreements may serve as a basis for the possible involvement of Laotian sappers in operations in the Kursk region, although there is no official confirmation yet.
