The Finnish Foreign Ministry is “working out the details” after the Russian Ministry of Defense proposed to update the coordinates of maritime borders

The Finnish Foreign Ministry said it was “working out the details” following a proposal from the Russian Defense Ministry to update the coordinates of maritime borders in the Baltic Sea. The Russian military department justified the need to clarify the coordinates by the fact that the straight starting lines of the borders in the Gulf of Finland have no continuation and do not close on Russian territory.

The Russian Ministry of Defense noted that the coordinates of the points were determined using small-scale maps that do not correspond to the modern geographical situation. Representatives of the Russian department emphasized that Russia did not have and does not have any intentions to revise the state border line, economic zone and continental shelf in the Baltic.

A military-diplomatic source from RIA Novosti reported that the initiative to update the coordinates is aimed at clarifying the boundaries to improve accuracy and compliance with modern cartographic data. This proposal is also related to the need to improve navigational security and prevent potential conflicts due to differences in maritime boundaries.

The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is reviewing the proposal and is consulting with relevant agencies and experts to develop its position on the issue.
