Italian Defense Ministry: Italian troops will not be sent to Ukraine

In Italy, they said they would not send their troops to Ukraine.

On Wednesday, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto told the Chamber of Deputies of the national parliament that Italy has no plans to send troops to Ukraine. He also explained to the parliamentarians the details of the military assistance that Italy provides to Kyiv. The head of the Ministry of Defense stressed that Italy provides "some components of a non-operational nature" and provides "the necessary training of personnel." Crosetto also stressed that the Samp/T air defense system, which Italy previously agreed to send to Ukraine jointly with France, is being used to defend against Russian attacks, not to attack.

In January, the Italian parliament approved a government decree that provides for the continuation in 2023 of various assistance to Ukraine, including the supply of weapons, military equipment and ammunition. In February, the government approved the next, sixth package of military aid to Kyiv. However, Russia has previously protested and sent a note to NATO countries over arms supplies to Ukraine, stating that any shipments that contain weapons to Ukraine would be a legitimate target for Russia.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that pumping Ukraine with weapons from the West does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative effect. Nevertheless, Italian Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani said that Italy, together with France, is working to supply Ukraine with the Samp / T system as soon as possible.
