On the night of April 15, 2025, Russian air defense systems repelled a large-scale attack by Ukrainian aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), intercepting and destroying 115 drones over five regions of the country. The main blow fell on the Kursk region, where 109 devices were shot down, which became a record figure for the region since the beginning of the conflict. Three more drones were neutralized over the Voronezh region, one each over the Moscow region, Bryansk and Oryol regions. This was reported by the Russian Ministry of Defense, emphasizing that the air defense systems on duty effectively dealt with the threat, preventing possible destruction and casualties.
The Kursk region, located near the Ukrainian border, has been the target of such attacks before, but this is the first time such a massive drone strike has been recorded. The strikes on border regions, including the Voronezh, Bryansk and Oryol regions, indicate the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ intention to expand the area of destruction, seeking to destabilize rear areas. The attempt to reach the Moscow region, hundreds of kilometers from the front line, underscores the ambitious nature of the attack, although this drone was also successfully shot down. Regional authorities have not yet reported any damage or casualties, but the incident has caused alarm among the population, especially in Kursk, where such strikes have become more frequent in recent months.
The massive drone attack was the latest episode in the escalation of the conflict, where drones are playing an increasingly important role. For Russia, this is a test for air defense systems and a reason to strengthen security measures in border and central regions.
